Is flexible dieting better than strict rules?
For staying on it, yes: fat loss was the same in a head to head trial, but the flexible group came out of it better.
Both approaches work while you run them, because both land on the same calories. The difference shows up in what happens next, and in whether one slip ends the whole attempt.
A practical version: fix your calories and your protein, keep most of your food simple, and leave room for what you actually like. The foods themselves matter far less than whether you are still doing this in three months.
